On 6 and 9 August 1945, the US Air Force dropped two huge bombs on two Japanese
cities. The first city was called Hiroshima and the second Nagasaki. These were
the first atomic bombs and - so far - the only ones that have ever been used in
war. By 1950 those two bombs and the radiation from them had killed 350,000 people.
By today's standards, those two bombs were very small. Hydrogen bombs are hundreds
of times more powerful and the nuclear-armed states (the USA, France, Russia,
China, Britain, Israel and, now, India and Pakistan) have thousands of them. I
wish people would unite and make governments give up nuclear weapons.
