How
many people are there on the planet now? 
Almost
one quarter of all people are very poor. Each of them has to live on

long as me and my friends are okay, it doesn't matter that so many people
are so very poor and some starve and die. (Uh... excuse me while I go
get myself another can of soda and a bag of chips) 
There
are over 9,600 types of bird (including penguins, of course). Many are
nearly extinct because of people killing them directly, poisoning them
with pollution or wrecking where they live. But how many? 
Elephants,
whales, mice and people are all mammals. There are over 4,600 different
types of mammals in the world and - you guessed it - lots of them are
in danger of becoming extinct for the same reasons as the endangered
birds. How many will go extinct within a few years if people don't do
something right away?
Americans
and Canadians use a lot of fuel (fossil fuel like gasoline). How much
do you think an average North American (that's everybody - man, woman
and child) uses each year?
